Twitter - The pros and cons of the better social network

Brandon B.

Great Social Media Platform

Overall, Twitter is a great tool for social media. It is a great tool for businesses to talk to their customers, and it's a great tool to share content on.

Not for me

I don't prefer it. It really isn't necessary to have Twitter to be a relevant online brand. There are enough alternatives to where you can skip this one and still be just fine as a social media presence.

Best for Individual Branding

It is a plesant platform to use and once one can connect with audience it is goldmine.

Pros

Not many people don't know what twitter is, it is probably one of the most recognizable social media platforms out there. I started using it for the purpose of advertising my art brand and it probably is the easiest, especially for beginners. It is very straight forward and forces you to keep your words under a certain count which helps with those of use that can be kinda longwinded...cough...cough. They integrate with just about everything and offer a really cool app called TweetDeck that can really help with organizing branded tweets, or any tweet, that you would want to save as a collection.

Cons

The double edge sword of only having a certain word count is sometimes even the leanest ads don't make the cut and you really have to balance between the keywords and the ad itself which can be annoying when you have already spent so much time to make a short ad to begin with only to learn that it still is not short enough. Also, the chances of a tweet being seen, with so many people tweeting their thoughts constantly, is not always high and you have to be kinda aggressive with tweeting without being overbearing.

Twitter - The pros and cons of the better social network

Pros

In a world dominated by Facebook owned properties, it is great to have a platform like Twitter. As a social network/social media app, there are many things that stand out about Twitter, here is my list of pros, I will have to compare it to the biggest social network:

1) Interesting learning curve - if you come from other social media platforms, Twitter may seem confusing at first but once you learn how to use it, you discover that it actually makes sense. The learning curve is difficult at first, but once you learn to use 280 characters, it will revolutionize how you use other platforms. That alone is worth trying it out.
2) Twitter's advertising platform is easier to use than Facebook. Its easy and intuitive to set up ads based on Tweets that are popular (which is the holy grail to social media advertising), budgeting and targeting is fairly easy too.
3) The real time nature of Twitter is better than the algorithms used by other platforms, this makes it ideal to follow news, events and information in real time and also for businesses to share information with their customer base.

Cons

There are only a few cons to Twitter at the moment

1) Editing Posts/Tweets the inability to edit tweets or posts after you have posted them is a huge con especially if you are a business or use it for PR.
2) Mobile support - Twitter's own apps do not have great mobile versions. Aside from Tweetdeck, there are very few alternatives to the main Twitter app that are worth using. With the limitation of the API, you are left with very few choices for mobile apps.

Overall, Twitter is a great tool for social media. It is a great tool for businesses to talk to their customers, and it's a great tool to share content on.

Pros

What I loved about Twitter was the fact that you can, as a company or entity, communicate with your followers or fans. It makes them feel important, heard, understood, etc. I loved how easy it was to add pictures, videos, etc to my post. Overall it was a great asset and tool to use to promote things like a video game.

Cons

Twitter lacks in terms of enforcement. That's probably the only downfall I've experienced with it. When I know that a post should be in violation of the ToS or Community Guidelines, Twitter disagrees when they review your report.

I don't prefer it. It really isn't necessary to have Twitter to be a relevant online brand. There are enough alternatives to where you can skip this one and still be just fine as a social media presence.

Pros

I like the ability to connect with others, promote events and activities, provide links to external sites (this is useful for fundraising organizations or if you want to direct people to your website/blog/news page). I like that in the past couple of years they gave users more control over blocking and reporting inappropriate behavior on the platform.

Cons

The users. There are a lot of "bots" on Twitter (not real people, computers designed to harass, troll, and tweet out the garbage) that add negativity and distract from connecting with real users. I also hate the online troll community that seems to get its kicks from bashing/hating on others, and users that use the software to spread hate, fear, anger, and overall toxicity. Unfortunately, the platform has not done a great job of ensuring that online harassment is controlled under the guise of free speech.

It is a plesant platform to use and once one can connect with audience it is goldmine.

Pros

It is a place to connect with people that are willing to be loyal, the wide range of users is why I love the platform

Cons

For me twitter is a place for personal opinions which when brands are entangled with it, it can spoil brands and reduce sales
