Duo Security
About Duo Security
Cisco Duo is a cloud-based access management platform that secures access to all applications, for any user and device, from anywhere. It’s designed to be easy to use and deploy while providing identity protection and endpoint visibility. Duo verifies users' identities with strong passwordless authentication and industry-leading Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Paired with deep insights into your users’ devices, Duo gives you the policies and control to limit access based on endpoint or user risk.
Duo verifies users’ identities in a number of ways, using two-factor authentication methods including SMS passcodes, phone callbacks, hardware tokens, and one-tap authentication through push notifications from the Duo Mobile app. Administrators can configure and enforce custom access policies and controls, including blocking user logins from specific locations, such as countries the company does not do business in. Application-based controls can also be set up, allowing administrators to define different two-factor authentication requirements for access to specific systems, such as requiring two-factor authentication for every VPN login attempt, but only once a week for Outlook access.
Duo allows users to create an inventory of user devices and use this data to identify vulnerabilities posed by outdated operating systems, browsers, and Flash & Java plugins. Users can be automatically notified of outdated devices, with direct links to update to the latest software version, provided a set number of login attempts before application access is blocked, or immediately blocked from accessing applications, with permissions reinstated after the browser or plugin has been updated. For organizations where certain applications have specific browser or Flash dependencies, self-remediation policies can be set up to notify only particular users of issues with specific plugins or browsers.
Duo’s Access Gateway offers a secure web portal to give Single Sign-On (SSO) access to employees who use 10 or more cloud applications. Applications are presented on a single page, giving users visibility into all available applications. Device security health checks are carried out every time a user accesses a cloud application, and user identity is verified without the need for them to re-authenticate each time they access an application.

I enjoy the endpoint security perspective of the application coupled with the simplistic user interface - this is very good for non-tech users working remotely.
Pros
I like that Duo let's you know what might compromise your experience on a platform. It tells you to upgrade your android/iOS handset and gives a severity level. This is great from an endpoint security perspective.
Cons
At times - the app takes a little time to prompt the user that an attempt is being made. This may be a function of slow infrastructure, but it is hard to assess.

Our users and administrators have both given positive feedback with using Duo. I would recommend to organizations looking to have reliable and secure logins.
Pros
Multifactor authentication has been effective at making users have to sign in securely to our networks. Duo admin console is easy for our techs to learn and user setup takes a few minutes to complete. The device and user management for sign-ins allows us to manage the authentication more effectively.
Cons
We have experienced the admin console inaccessible at times when there have been updates or outages. The timer for accepting pushes doesn't always sync up correctly.

Beware! Customer service has been non-existent following Cisco acquisition
Reviewed on 10/03/2020
Pros
We have used Duo for many years. It was easy to implement and has always worked well.
Cons
Last year we negotiated bulk pricing and paid in advance for a 14-month term. Later we discovered that they had never provisioned our licenses and were still billing our credit card. Now, four months later, after numerous phone calls and more than a dozen emails, they have still not provisioned the licenses we paid for. They have acknowledged that this is their mistake and they need to fix it, but they seem incapable of doing so.
I get the sense that their organization is completely dysfunctional following the Cisco acquisition. Given that they cannot solve the challenge of "how does a customer purchase your software?", I am worried what might happen if you came to them with anything more difficult.

We use Duo to provide better security to our end users and to comply with regulatory requirements. The solution is inexpensive, easy to use and integrate with the existing applications.
Pros
Duo is a cheap, flexible solution that allows a company to easily implement MFA on corporate applications.Pros: - Out of the box integrations with applications such as Office365, Salesforce, Microsoft ADFS, etc.- Adding users is easy, with several enrollment methods (automatic, email based, sms based, etc.)- Using the application is easy, it is just a matter of accepting a push, or entering a numeric code.
Cons
So far I haven't had any issues with the solution. It was implemented for Office365 and ADFS in less than an hour.

Security to fill a gap, but not comprehensive offering

Duo Security is a strong SaaS product to fill the very specific infrastructure gap of 2-factor authentication for infrastructure.
Pros
Duo Security is a great product to fill a very specific gap in infrastructure security, specifically for SSH management. For requirements for 2-factor authentication for SSH, Duo is quick to implement
Cons
Duo is difficult to enroll users with, which creates a significantly higher administrative overhead than other options. There are also significantly more delays in the Duo pushed-based notification systems (depending on the user and their network, etc.), which can cause issues for users authenticating.

Google WorkspaceReasons for Switching to Duo Security
G Suite SAML login was more difficult to implement in very specific situations than simply purchasing Duo. In the future, the goal is to move to a more BeyondCorp style model where each specific application can use SAML and not rely on DuoDuo Security FAQs
