Home for Learning New Languages in a Fun, Casual Way

Duolingo knows how to keep learners motivated. Daily challenges, leaderboards, progress reports, reminders, the app's relaxing theme - everything suits my passive learning style. As the lessons are short in length, I usually get into a lesson without dedicating a long session for it. It has been a great experience so far.

Pros

A wide range of language courses is available to enroll. One of the most attractive things about Duolingo is the way the entire learning process is set up - Gamified, relaxing bite-sized lessons to dive into anytime, even on the go. Progress tracking, looking back into previously learned contents, leaderboards, community to discuss with other learners/experts - everything is well organized and easily accessible. One great part is, anyone can dive in to learn any language without spending money while staying opted out of any advertisements.

Cons

While Duolingo gives a way of learning in a fun casual way in a gamified environment, someone who has a higher priority of learning a language over other activities might find Duolingo's pace rather slow. Sometimes the lessons do feel kind of repetitive. Not everyone learns at the same pace, and I think this balancing still has an opportunity for improvement. The mobile app still lacks various features available in the web app.

Pros

I can learn a language at any time because I use it mobile. And the abundant practice and private lessons reinforce the learning.

Cons

Although it does not teach the foreign language completely, it provides a very good preliminary preparation.

Bad update

I used to love it. I can understand some words on closed captioning on the TV before I read them. I can understand some words my Spanish coworkers use. They just need to slow down.,,as I don’t know all the words yet, but can grab the context of what they are saying. But now I will ever learn a new word as I can’t pass the previous levels I had mastered because they have extremely SHORT timers. They want you to PAY for timer boosts, they have gotten greedy and want money. I have sent feedback several times and have NEVER received an answer.me hence the review. If they would’ve at least contacted me and explained their reasoning..I may not have been so harsh., but seriously their update SUCKS

Pros

I used to love it. They updated it and have timed reviews to pass a level. I have to pass everything before I move on. I cannot move on with only one star. It BUGS me. You need three stars and they do NOT give you near enough time. I make so many mistakes rushing. I am about to drop the course

Cons

The lack of time to get the three stars

Overall, I love Duolingo. It's a cute software, easy to navigate and always fun to go through.

Pros

I love the user interface, the mode of learning and the real life competition you get with other learners, this makes you want to learn more and give it your all.

Cons

They tend to make it all about the streak and it makes learners not to actually learn anything and just want to make it up the leaderboard. I hope they consider those using the free mode and make it easier for them.

I recommended Duolingo to my students. They use the app both in the classroom and at home (even the parents). The children were excited to use Duolingo accessing tasks from different domains, fun tasks made in the form of games. Thus, we turn education into serious play.

Pros

I love Duolingo! Lessons for learning a foreign language are short, fast, I get immediate feedback, I have the possibility of self-correction. as you accumulate information, the app offers the opportunity to move to new levels. The advantage is that you can work at any time, at your own pace, thus developing your communication skills in different languages.

Cons

I have nothing to complain about. It's the app that gives me what I'm looking for.

Generally, i have had a great experience with Duolingo. I am actually still using it at the moment.

Pros

What i like most about Duolingo is the fact that it is absolutely free and out of all the other language learning apps, it has the widest variety of languages to learn; 37 to be exact. I also like the simplicity of the app. It's so easy to use even for the most ordinary person. The way the app is designed with funny animations is so welcoming that you can actually look forward to learning a language. I also love the way the app is designed to encourage the learner to not give up even when he or she has made a number of errors. Duolingo recognizes that language learning is not easy and patience is a required virtue so when one feels like throwing in the towel, the app is there to remind you in some way that it may be challenging, but it will all be worth it in the end. With all the positive attributes that the app possesses, i believe it is a great and fun tool that can even be used by children and families not just for learning, but for spending leisure.

Cons

What i dislike about this software is the lack of option for learning offline. I think learning should not be limited to strong internet connection. If there is a way that the software can be adjusted just a bit to accommodate learners who have poor internet connection, that would be wonderful so that learning goals can be reached faster. When it comes to the ads, there are some ads that are displayed that make me feel uncomfortable even as an adult. For instance If i was using Duolingo in public and some of these ads are shown, then people can question my character and probably any other learner's character.

I have really enjoyed learning a new language with Duolingo, it made it accessible and fun and fit into my busy time table.I have completed one tree and now am starting a new language.

Pros

Easy to use with helpful reminders in a busy work schedule.Lessons can be short enough to do on your break or you can do multiple, this can be managed with goals of how much you want to achieve.

Cons

Some parts are repetitive and new ways to learn and be assessed would help with engagement and retention of people using the app.

Overall, duolingo is a fast and easy way to learn new languages. Only worth it, however, if you stick with latin based languages. If you have a need or desire to learn something unique like Russian, Ukranian, Arabic, etc, I would steer clear and go with Babble or Rosetta Stone. You won't get far with the lack of a Cyrillic keyboard, for instance. The fact they do not offer this when other language learning companies do is a cop out. I should not have to install something extra on my phone or computer. I should not have to bounce out to a separate window to formulate my text in Russian and copy and paste it into duolingo. Makes it VERY difficult to learn. I am frustrated. This is a fix other companies provide. Rise up and be better.

Pros

Picking up a second language is really easy. The lessons are straight forward, and my Spanish has improved significantly from using duolingo.

Cons

If a language course is going to offer languages that use a non Latin based alphabet -- like Russian, for instance, they should include a Russian keyboard. Babble does this. the lack of this keyboard makes learning clunky if not impossible. I will be canceling my pro plan until they rectify this or switching to Babble where they take the time to do it right.

I'm a happy user of Duolingo. I recommend it to my students. It's not possible to learn a language entirely only using a Duolingo (well, that's not surprising), but it's way easier if a student uses it. I like their new features (podcasts, short stories). I would like to see improvements on machine translation and to see more customer support when users spot mistakes in the phrases.

Pros

It looks like a game - beautifully designed and user friendly;
there are new features now and then (podcasts, short stories, grammar comments, etc.);
constantly changing and adding new material or diving the old one in different chapters;
works both on phone and on desktop device;
easy to keep track of learning.

Cons

There is a feature of "streak" - how many days in a row have you used Duolingo and earned XPs (points). However, if one can't keep up with the streak, usually it ends up in losing motivation to learn after all. This is especially true for those who had 100-200 days of streak (well, I'm one of them!)

Some topics are devided into so many small classes that they become too repetitive and might seem boring.

Sometimes the phrases you need to translate make no sense at all ("my blu turtle wears black jeans" style of sentences). Also, Duolingo lacks flexibility in terms of machine translation - it simply doesn't accept different answers to the same question, although it should

A great way to learn a language!

It's been a good way to ensure I keep practicing every day.

Pros

This is a very user-friendly and fun way to begin learning a language. Of course, it cannot entirely replace either a language class or practicing speaking with others fluent in your target language, but it is a good way to begin to learn some vocabulary and grammar so that you can begin speaking confidently. It is fun to use, and provides good positive feedback. It also incentivises you to practice daily, which is critical for learning a language.

Cons

The 'hearts' system where points are taken away for each mistake can be annoying, and you either have to pay a monthly subscription to get rid of it, or pay with diamonds (points given for successful lessons or purchased) to keep the lesson going if you run out completely during a lesson. Given it's a free service I guess this is a minor problem. Some people find the cartoon characters (Duo and friends) annoying, but this depends on your preferences I guess.

Was using the free version for a while and it's been great. Those ads have been realy obnoxious and feel my Spanish reading and vocab has improved a enough to order the 12 month plan. Definetely recommend full version.

Pros

I really like the app. It is great to learn the basics. To be clear just using Duolingo to learn a language is not enough. You need other methods as well and most importantly you need to practice with native speakers.
Btw, not only is their platform pleasing, fast, and fun, it works as promised!
the only downside is of course the ads (and hence the 4 stars -- program and content is 5 stars for sure), but hey, IT IS FREE! IGNORING THE ADS IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY!

Cons

Quantity of material varies among languages.
And I was really enjoying the program and the motivation it provided to keep my daily usage streak going., but reporting the bug is not easy, I did my best and after 3 days they have responded. That nippers little bit.

Duolingo is the best and most intuitive app for learning languages the fun way.

Reviewed on 22/11/2022

Overall I consider it to be the best way to learn a language, both on the website and in the app. Learning is light and often you don't realize you're learning. The visual is quite beautiful and attractive, the colors, the images, audios. Learning becomes easy and the best: free of charge.

Pros

I've been using the app for over 9 years and it was with it that I was able to learn two languages and now I'm taking on an even bigger challenge, which is learning Korean. The practices are always a lot of fun, the audios and images help us to better assimilate the vocabulary and this makes learning practical and efficient.

Cons

A negative point is the difficulty of reporting errors so that they are resolved on time. Mistakes often happen that take away a life and the answer was correct. I know the idea is to have repetitions, but I could change it for more vocabularies and even add basic expressions to improve learning even more.

An easy and interactive way to learn a new language

Reviewed on 18/06/2023

Pros

Duolingo offers the opportunity to create a strong foundation when learning a new language, by offering some theoretical information, through practical exercises (dialogues, grammatical exercises, short stories, etc.). For me, the most helpful feature was the audio lessons, where you can hear how words or specific letters are pronounced, also it gives you the chance to practice your speaking skills; afterward giving feedback (right or wrong answer or pronunciation).

Cons

Overall, the app is very easy to use and understand, but I would love the see some improvement in the theory section; for a beginner, with no knowledge of the new language, it would be beneficial to have more information about phonetics, orthography, common exceptions and general grammatical and linguistic theories.

I love duo! It helps me to keep learning and is fun and easy to use! I find the stories are really nice for 'real-world' applications of using the vocabulary. Honestly, highly recommend!

Pros

Duo is so easy to use and fun! It keeps me accountable and helps me to remember words that I may otherwise forget if it wasn't for the good timing! I like that it's a quick daily lesson and that Duo sends reminders if I fall off from Daily use. User friendly, cute graphics, and most importantly useful for language learning!

Cons

There's very little that I would list as a con with Duolingo. I use the free version so not all features are unlocked, which works for me, but you do have the option to pay to unlock more features. They give you the option to flag answers that you believe may have an error, but it does that a while for those to be reviewed.

Great! No app will ever be on its level

Pros

what I have always appreciated about Duolingo is the possibility of learning languages or improving the practicality of others through games, tests and challenges. It seems strange, but the "for fun" approach manages to teach many more things than boring severe and difficult courses. It starts from the basic knowledge to implement them more and more, without ever forgetting the previous ones. Furthermore, the function that I appreciate the most is being able to practice multilingual at the same time

Cons

I would like Duolingo to add the function of having a conversation with a robot, in voice form, or a chat conversation, to simulate a real chat with another person and make the daily practice of the language even more realistic

In overall, I love Duolingo. I find myself watching French movies now and understanding something that I never did but of course I still refer to subtitles to confirm that I am on the right track. My reason for learning a new language is for exercising my brain and keeping it sharp.

Pros

For starters, Duolingo is free despite the fact that it teaches you a whole new language, a language that can change your life in terms of improving your cv, giving your brain a sharp memory etc. I like that Duolingo sends me emails or notifications everyday when he realizes I may have forgotten about the lessons because most times I would have. Duolingo has very interesting French lessons that are also part of the lessons. They are really interesting and make you want to continue reading and studying.

Cons

When I am recording my voice in response to what Duo wants me to say, I realize that the speech recognition is not that precise. At times I hear myself pronounce badly and be ready to say it again but Duo does not hear it properly and marks as pronounced properly. The speech recognition is lacking a bit and I believe can be improved.

I have been using Duolingo on and off since 2014. It has helped me learn couple of new languages and I use it to this day. I definitely recommend new language learners to install and use it.

Pros

Duolingo is a great tool to learn new language. Some of its best features are: abundance pf pictures to help the user learn even better, the stories that let the user interact with them, the weekly leaderboard that push the user to perform and learn even more, and many more.

Cons

The only thing I don't really like in Duolingo are the excessive ads that pop-up after every single lesson. It didn't use to be like that previously, but now it seems making money is the number priority instead of helping user learn new language (like it was originally). Other than that pretty decent software.

I have been taking courses on duolingo since July 2023. Until recently I was very happy with duolingo overall. I am genuinely interested in learning a new language and truly happy that duolingo is helping me learn. I have dedicated time daily to my learning. I make a very conscious effort to set time aside in my day and in my life to use duolingo to learn a language. I paid for a subscription and as such I expect not only to use this services but to learn and understand how my learning journey is progessing. I encouraged my friends to use duolingo. This week I came across a supposed user in my league who not only came out of nowhere – I have not seen them in previous leagues, but who is surpassing fast in every lesson and accumulating points with a speed that is incredible. I am pretty good but I do not thing it possible to achieve the equivalent of five units in one hour. So I looked into bots and there are a few discussions out there about Duolingo supposedly using bots to increase the time users spend on the app. This made me lose confidence in this appIt is frankly insulting if this is what Duolingo chooses to do. Increasing competition between real users is a great idea. Using false users to do so is paramount to laughing in our faces and taking the efforts we make learning a language for granted. In the future, I will not recommend this to anyone.

Pros

easy to understand and follow. tips are good although there could be more

Cons

Potential use of bots that came up recently.

I have tried a few other language learning apps, but I always come back to Duolingo. It is yet to be seen if it can help me gain some level of fluency (which will likely require more language immersion than an app can provide), but it has been an excellent tool to get me started in that direction.

Pros

The interface is very easy to use and has improved considerably over the years. The gamification of learning has really helped me stay on track: It is fun to be able to quickly move through each task while still seeing noticeable progress. The whole experience is definitely finely tuned in order to keep you from getting discouraged while also being challenged.

Cons

Since the base version is free, there must be ads, but, besides the ads, I wish there were not so many prompts to click through after every lesson. The calculation of points and rewards should be only one or two screens: I want to get on to the next lesson.

I have used Duolingo several times to learn a foreign language. Once, I even studied for over a year every day without a break. I recommended it to a few friends, and they were also satisfied. It's a great solution for someone who prefers to learn on their own rather than with a native speaker or in a group.

Pros

Price (it's for free!), ease of use (the app guides you step by step by your hand), extensive language courses, UX of the app

Cons

Apart from minor mistakes in a few lessons (which I reported and which have been corrected), Duolingo works perfectly.
